Why do we, as Christians, continue to sin even in spite of the warnings in 1 John, even when we know it's wrong, and even when we understand the sacrifice Christ had to go through?

In churches, the bar is set so high that it's impossible to reach. Often, you hear sermons about people who live in willful sin. But look at how often anyone sins everyday. From pride, to gossip, to self-indulgence in watching too much television, to adultry (even in the mind), to overeating (gluttony), to not being totally upfront and honest about all things, to not even want to spend time in prayer, etc.

I don't care what the pastors preach about sin, everyone does it, and half the time, they do it deliberately.

What gives?

Hello Larry,

Well, first, we should always take into consideration that mankind is fallen, i.e. because of the sin of Adam and Eve, we to this day, suffer from the effects of that sin. Man's nature, is therefore fallen and is inclined to sin. It is through baptism and therefore acceptance of Christ, that we are incorporated into the life of the Holy Trinity and a life of grace. The gift of free will which God has granted to humanity is a precious gift and ought to be used wisely. Hence, why we as Christians are to avoid those things and situations that lead us to sin. No one, save Christ, is perfect. However, having said that, the Chuch does expect all her members to live a life worthy of a Christian believer.

Best wishes.
